Situated at the southern edge of the Yorkshire Dales, The Devonshire Arms Hotel & Spa is a charming country house hotel in picturesque surroundings.

What was once a humble traveller’s Inn is now home to fine dining, luxurious decor, and superior service. And did we mention the 30,000 acres of glorious countryside?

From an indulgent weekend to the wedding of a lifetime—at The Devonshire Arms Hotel & Spa we will help you to make it memorable.

Our History

The Devonshire Arms was built in the 17th century and came under the ownership of the 4th Duke of Devonshire in 1753 as part of the Bolton Abbey Estate.

It was the 5th Duke, though, who cemented its place in history.

Realising the importance of visitors to the area, the Duke established miles of footpaths. This gave the public a chance to admire the splendid views and take in the serenity of the land.

Word quickly spread. The area soon attracted poets and artists including Wordsworth and Turner, who marvelled at the joys of the Estate.

During the 19th century, the Royal Family visited Bolton Abbey for grouse shoots. The Devonshire Arms, which was often used for hospitality, expanded so that by 1840 it could stable twenty horses and four carriages.

The coming of the railway in 1888 and the motor car in the early 20th century placed new demands on the hotel.

In response to the influx of new visitors, The Cavendish Pavilion was built by the riverside. It provided refreshments for country lovers of all ages; a task it nobly carries out to this day.

In 1981, the hotel underwent a major refurbishment. Additional bedrooms were added, under the supervision of Her Grace the Dowager Duchess of Devonshire.

The Duchess’s personal touch is still evident throughout. Much of the artwork has come from Chatsworth’s Devonshire Collection, one of the finest private art collections in Europe.

Today, the hotel retains all of the charm that has attracted visitors through the centuries. Luxury, countryside splendour, and the rugged beauty of the Dales. Here’s to many more centuries of inspiration.
