Christmas at Chatsworth

This Christmas, step inside Chatsworth House and be magically transported to the mystical frozen realms of the far north. The Norse god Loki, a powerful sorcerer and mischief-maker, has harnessed his shape-shifting powers to cast an enchanted spell over Chatsworth at Christmas. The Christmas legends, folklore and traditions of the Arctic and Nordic regions have been brought to life in a series of fully immersive roomscapes. Intricately sculpted ice walls, giant woodland hideaways, sparkling pine forests, candlelight, lanterns and traditional Nordic Christmas decorations crafted from wood and foliage evoke the sights, sounds and scents of the natural world at wintertime, and exclusive pieces from the Devonshire Collections that are not often on display, will take pride of place.

Step into scenes straight from the pages of famous Nordic fairy tales; the White Bear, the Little Fir Tree, the Snowdrop and the Teapot. Collect postcards on your journey, each featuring popular tales from Nordic children’s authors, including Hans Christian-Andersen, alongside photographs of items from the Devonshire Collections.

Loki, himself, will be making a special guest appearance providing stories, music and magic tricks and enticing you into the garden where the magic continues. Outside in the garden is the spectacular illuminated trails and light features all inspired by Nordic lights, as well as the fantastically festive  Chatsworth Christmas Market (open 5th to 23rd November) where a range of Nordic gifts, decorations and tasty treats will be on sale.

Bolsover Castle

Bolsover Castle is just a short drive from the Chatsworth Estate, and is certainly worth a visit if you’re staying at one of our lovely hotel or inns.

With spectacular views over Derbyshire, Bolsover Castle was designed to entertain and impress. The fairy tale hilltop castle we see today was built in 1617! It was designed by Sir Charles Cavendish, the third son of Bess of Hardwick. Originally a pleasure house for the wealthy, Bolsover Castle is now the perfect day out to spend with your friends and family. Wander the lavish rooms of the Little Castle, part of the original main block of the castle. It was designed using ideas from artistic and architectural elements that were borrowed from some of the most famous creations of the Renaissance. Definitely a sight not to be missed!

You can explore the romantic ruined terrace range, and take in the incredible views from the Wall Walk . Start your visit in the exhibition in the Riding House and then be sure to stretch your legs in the extensive grounds. The Pavilion Gardens

Located in the heart of Buxton, the Pavilion Gardens is a gorgeous, historic venue which dates back to 1871 and has grade II status. Set within 23 acres of splendid, landscaped gardens, the venue provides the ideal setting for a lovely relaxing day out. Within the building complex there’s something to suit everyone’s taste, including brilliant shops, tearooms and the winter conservatory.

Cromford Mill and Village

Crisp winter days are ideal for exploring the varied terrain and breath-taking views of the Peak District. A particular favourite walk of ours is the Cromford Mill and Village walk, please click here to find out more information.

Cromford Mill is the world's first water-powered cotton spinning mill, developed by Richard Arkwright in 1771. This walking route starts across the road from the mill so be sure to visit, there are also guided tours available. Some believe that this remarkable mill site changed the world we live in today! This 6 or 8 mile walk gives you the opportunity to delve into Derbyshire’s rich history and see what Cromford has to offer, as you pass through the village along the nearby canal. The village was in fact originally built for the mill workers! Today it is now full of shops, picturesque cottages and a wonderful market square, the perfect place to stop off for lunch after exploring the mill. Later in the walk you will arrive at the High Peak Trail, a former railway track which is followed down to High Peak Junction where it’s met by Cromford Canal. Cromford village is only a short drive away from all of our properties on the Chatsworth Estate, and is a brilliant opportunity for a great day out, with or without the walk!

Hope Valley

If you fancy a longer walk, then we recommend that you visit Hope Valley. One of the most popular areas of the Peak District National Park, boasting some of the greatest views and most idyllic villages in the region.

A great place to start your day of exploring is the small village of Edale, home to the Pennine Way, the start and end of the UK’s first and most famous long distance walking path. The village has a local shop, a café and two popular pubs, a great place to relax after a day of rambling. This area of peak district is also accessible by train, as the Hope Valley Line stops at Edale train station on its way from Sheffield to Manchester.
