We are pleased to launch an unmissable opportunity to explore Chatsworth while it is closed to the general public. This offer is available at our sister properties: The Cavendish Hotel, Baslow, The Devonshire Arms at Beeley, and The Devonshire Arms at Pilsley.

As Chatsworth, one of Britain’s most loved historic houses, closes its doors for the winter months of January and February, the house enters another period of busy activity. Far from a holiday, there now starts a well-planned, 12-week programme of conservation, deep cleaning, repair and restoration, in readiness for another busy season.

In an exclusive arrangement, guests of the Devonshire Hotels and Restaurants collection staying in our Chatsworth accommodation, now have a limited availability opportunity to go behind the scenes of this great house and learn more of its ‘Secrets & Stories’, with a series of private guided tours taking place this winter.

Led by specialist guide, Shenagh Firth, each tour will delve into the work taking place at that time, therefore each one will be unique, focussing on a key area of the house in depth, and offering the chance to learn more about the particular projects taking place, such as restoring gold leaf on a wood carving, or deep cleaning a rare silk tapestry.

Shenagh and her team will guide guests through the house, including popular areas such as the Painted Hall, State Apartments, Sculpture Gallery and the Sketch Galleries, sharing their expertise, along with many anecdotes, secrets and tips. There will also be an insight into the 10 year “Masterplan” for this great house, in which over £32m has been invested for future generations.

Devonshire Hotels and Restaurants guests will gain insight in to the estate, its legacy and stewardship, be updated about new installations and exhibitions, and learn about the hugely talented in-house team, recently-restored interiors and works of art.

The duration of each tour is between 60 - 90 minutes, and each will host only a small group, of no more than 20 guests. These guided tours are exclusively available to guests booking a ‘Secrets and Stories’ two-night stay at The Cavendish at Baslow, or at one of the estate inns - The Devonshire Arms at Beeley or The Devonshire Arms at Pilsley, between 20 January and 28 February, 2020. Packages are valid for Sunday - Thursday evenings only. Tours take place each morning, 11am, on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings.
