A visit to the Peak District is not complete without a trip to Chatsworth, but there’s so much more to see and do in the local area. Here we have pulled together just a few of our favourite things to do during your summer break.

Walks around the Peak District

There is an abundance of walks to enjoy including the popular traffic-free route of the Monsal Trail as well as hikes off the beaten track in the Peak District. The scenery is some of the best in the country with beautiful vistas at every turn; imagine babbling brooks and picnics on the riverside to enjoy on your summer break. Scenic drive

We can’t always rely on the British weather to play ball on our summer staycations, so a scenic drive is the ideal way to take in the views of the Peak District when you don’t want to get wet! This is also a great option for those who have less mobility but would still like to explore the area, with panoramic views and magnificent scenery at every turn.

Hardwick Hall

Hardwick Hall is an Elizabethan style country house, located 40 minutes drive from Chatsworth. After ownership for centuries by the Cavendish family and the line of the Earl of Devonshire and the Duke of Devonshire, ownership of the house was transferred to the Treasury in 1956 and then to the National Trust in 1959. Hardwick Hall is renowned as being one of the first examples of Renaissance architecture in England, built by Bess of Hardwick. The house is open to the public (Please see the website below for opening restrictions and ticket information) with an on site cafe and extensive grounds and parkland to explore.

Bolsover Castle

As well as Chatsworth House, Bolsover Castle is a must-see for history lovers when visiting the area. The castle is just a 35 minute drive from Chatsworth and has spectacular views over Derbyshire. The fairy-tale Stuart mansion was designed to entertain and impress with extensive ground waiting to be explored. You can wander the lavish rooms of the Little Castle (Subject to opening restrictions, advance booking may be necessary), explore the romantic ruined terrace range, and delight in the views from the wall walk.

Bakewell

Bakewell is the only market town within the Peak District National Park boundary and its attractive courtyards, independent shops, cafés and its location on the River Wye make it a hugely popular destination for tourists to the Peak District. Spend a day meandering the streets browsing the boutiques and artisan producers. Not forgetting it’s the home of the famous Bakewell pudding which can be sampled at The Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop.

With all this and more on your doorstep, there's nowhere better to delight in a Great British Staycation than the Peak District. Choose from our two country inns and luxury hotel on the Chatsworth Estate.
